With a small living room, it’s important to make the most of the space you have available, and especially not to get hung up on wishing you had a bigger room or barely doing anything at all due to ‘size limitations’. That’s why we’ve pulled together all sorts of small living room ideas to give you the decorating inspiration you need.

1. Avoid darker colours

Perhaps an obvious one, but for compact spaces, a darker colour scheme can make things feel more cramped. Neutrals like beiges, whites, and soft greys help your room feel bigger. Personality can then be added via pops of colour and patterns on soft furnishings, wall art, and other home accessories.

And if you are insistent on keeping things cosy with darker colours as part of your small living room design, it is possible to make it look good! For instance – consider colour drenching and stay clear of overhead lighting, opt for lamps instead.

2. Incorporate multifunctional furniture and clever storage

Another small living room idea is to incorporate multifunctional furniture and clever storage wherever possible. By doing so, you’ll be able to ensure your lounge remains clutter-free and maximise floor space.

We’re talking sofa beds for hosting guests, storage footstools that can hide away spare blankets and miscellaneous items like board games, and side tables with storage that can not only house a few bits but also mean you have that much-needed surface for drinks or décor. Our living room storage guide goes into more detail on this topic.

3. Check furniture sizes to not overwhelm the space

When it comes to a small living room layout, the most important thing is not picking out furniture that overwhelms your space, and that includes the centrepiece of any living room – the sofa.

We understand that you might have been imagining getting a sofa that the whole household can sprawl out on, but you do have to be realistic about whether it will even look right in your small living room or if it will take over the space.

Yes, you may have to compromise on going large, but doing so will mean you have more floor space to play with and not make your lounge feel smaller than it is. A 2 seater sofa can still look more than inviting enough, or, depending on exact dimensions, you may even be able to get away with a slim 3-seater sofa. Be sure to check out our guide to sofas for small living rooms which includes everything you need to know.

4. Bring in as much natural light as possible

Natural lighting might be one of the easier small living room ideas on our list given that you just need to make sure that you’re not unnecessarily blocking the daylight from filtering in. The reason for this being that natural light is a great way to make your room feel more open and airy.

From a layout perspective, make sure furniture isn’t going to block your windows, and if need be, opt for a low back sofa or chair as this will be able to let in more sunshine. You can also maximise natural light by sticking to light-coloured curtains or blinds that can still let plenty of light into your space and brighten things up.

5. Don’t forget about vertical space

The first thing that pops into your head when thinking about how to decorate a small living room is probably not doing something with vertical space, but this is just as important! There are various ways you can take advantage of this and give the illusion that your lounge is bigger than it actually is.

Some small living room ideas related to vertical space include opting for tall shelving that draws the eye upwards and hanging curtains a bit higher than directly above the window for that floor-to-ceiling look.

6. Reflect light through mirrors

Aside from being a stylish addition, mirrors work like magic by reflecting light and giving the impression that your space is bigger than it truly is. Whether you choose a large floor mirror, hang one on the wall opposite a window, or find furniture pieces that have a reflective surface, there are lots of ways to achieve this small living room idea.
